Session Objectives
Session 5: Scales of Motion
Upon completion of this session, a participant should be able to do the following:
- Describe motions that occur on the following scales:
- Global scale
- Synoptic scale
- Mesoscale
- Microscale
- Describe the difference between the following air masses:
- Describe the general flow around high and low pressure systems.
- Describe the formation of a thermal circulation.
- Describe the difference between molecular and eddy viscosity. State which one has a greater influence on atmospheric motion and why.
- Explain the use of grids in atmospheric modeling.
- Describe meteorological time notations and the importance of understanding how to convert between universal time and local time.
