Session Objectives
Session 3: Measures of the Atmosphere
Upon completion of this session, a participant should be able to
do the following:
- Distinguish between the following atmospheric moisture
variables:
- relative humidity
- absolute humidity
- specific humidity
- mixing ratio
- Given a wind vector on a map, determine its direction using
the standard meteorological convention.
- Solve for pressure, density, or temperature of a gas using
the equation of state.
- Define the virtual temperature (Tv) and explain the
significance of converting the measured atmospheric temperature
into a virtual temperature.
- Describe the relationship between the temperature and
pressure of a rising or sinking parcel of air.
- Define the lifting condensation level (LCL) and explain its
significance to cloud formation.
- List several remote sensing devices used and the types of
meteorological parameters they are used to measure.
