Kevin A. RumseyKevin, also known as "Big Man" to all his friends, due to his ability to get things accomplished, is the Development Officer at the Foundation. He is the man who "gets things done"! Kevin joined the Shodor Family in December 2000. He is a graduate of State University of New York, College at Fredonia, class of 1985. Kevin majored in Special Studies (Labor Relations) and Sociology, with a minor in Business Administration. He was a 3-year letterman in Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track, with several school records in Indoor Track, one of which still stands today! Upon graduating, he wanted to pursue a running career, so he worked flexible jobs, which allowed him time to train as a world class athlete. As fate would have it, his love of running brought him to North Carolina. Duke was forming a post graduate team, through DUPAC, which was the forerunner of Duke Center for Living. He traveled up and down the East Coast, competing in races from 800 meters to 10,000 meters. His dedication lead him to a shoe contract with Team Etonic. He ran for several National Running clubs, including Athletics In Action, and Four Winds Christian Athletic Club. After what he thought was a career ending injury, in 1986, Kevin spent some time working on journalism at Duke University. In 1990, after not running in 4 years, he decided to "test his legs", and ran a local race in upstate New York. Not only did he win the race, but also he broke the course record! That was his come back race, which would lead to many more victories. In 1992, Kevin had a chance to qualify for the Olympic Trials. The qualifier was held at West Point Military Academy, in Highland Falls, NY. Kevin continued to run competitively in NY, until his wife, Trish, was transferred with her job, back to North Carolina. He and the children followed. He picked up his running career once again, and was negotiating another shoe contract, when he injured his foot, during a "friendly" basketball game, with some close friends. This time, it took a toll on his body. He was unable to make another miraculous comeback. In the past 10 years, Kevin has worked for several large companies, here in NC. During this time, Kevin and his wife have kept busy, "procreating"! Their family is always growing! Kevin is the Proud PaPa of 7 children... Six on Earth, and One in Heaven. He is also a Prouder Grandpa to Isaiah Christian, who is just 10 weeks younger, than his youngest son! His pride and joys are: Christine, David, Benjamin, Aaron, Eliana, Franklin-in-Heaven, and Gabriel. Kevin has also found time to become active in the community. He is a Mentor for the Tar Heel Challenge program, in Clinton, NC; in the United States Naval Reserves; a board member on the St. Phillips Community Kitchen; has been a volunteer coach for his sons' soccer and T-ball teams; Leadership Durham Class 2000; Ambassador for the Durham Chamber of Commerce; Steering Committee for Leadership Durham 2001 and Kids Voting USA Durham. Kevin met Bob Gotwals ...aka Bob2... at the YMCA of Greater Durham where Kevin was Director of Corporate Relations, and renewed their friendship at Leadership Durham 2000. He met Bob Panoff...aka Bob 1... also through his involvement with Leadership Durham 2000. Kevin was the project leader for the Shodor project. Visit Kevin Rumsey's Home Page.
